The wound is the place where the Light enters you.
- Rumi
After these 30+ years together, I have worked through my unhealthy beliefs, pushed myself to open up wounds and deal with deep fears which has allowed for vital growth and healing. I was desperate to feel better. It was messy at first and started out sort of bumpy. Sadly my husband was on the receiving end of much of my quest for truth. It was what I knew in the early days. You see I grew up in a family (still) filled with addiction of all sorts. It is a hereditary condition that is part of the tissues and fiber of several generations and the many branches of my twisted family tree.
After a while I got to a place of relief in my life and I began to ask, when will I be completely better? That’s actually a joke because there is no finish line. For the rest of my life I will continue to check in with the unhealthy belief systems that were “hardwired” into my psyche as a kid that kept dysfunction patterns alive and self supporting. It is easy to fall into old reactions and emotional triggers that damage my relationships with others and myself.
So much about growing up as a child of an alcoholic is about losing yourself to the family’s disease.
We were not allowed to express ourselves for fear of being abandoned or unloved. We carry the shame of being our true selves since that was unacceptable or minimized. We push our needs to the background so we become invisible or a pleaser, subsequently our self esteem has no room to grow to be healthy and strong. That space in the household was taken up by the addict's narcissistic sick needs to feel better in whatever way that was.
It can be confusing to sort it all out because we lost touch with our own needs years ago and it appears we are at fault as many of us are taught to believe. And to keep the familiar patterns going that we are used to we tend put people in our lives that magically know how weigh down our self esteem so it stays low.
“No matter where we live on the planet or how difficult our situation seems to be, we have the ability to overcome and transcend our circumstances.”
― Louise L. Hay
